Move and delete terms

As a glossary grows, terms end up in the wrong place or stop being useful. This page covers moving a term to another glossary and deleting a term, including what happens to its child terms in each case.

In the app: Business Context › Glossaries › your glossary › your term › Move Term / Delete Term

Before you start

  • Your organization must not be in read-only mode.
  • To move a term, the destination glossary must already exist.

Move a term to another glossary

  1. Open the term and click Move Term.
  2. Pick the Destination glossary.
  3. Optionally pick a Destination parent term in that glossary. Leave it empty to place the term at the top level.
  4. Choose how to move:
    • If the term has no children, click Move term.
    • If it has children, pick one of the two options below.
Option What happens
Move term and all children The whole branch moves to the destination glossary with its hierarchy intact.
Move term, promote children up one level Only this term moves. Its direct children stay in the original glossary and move up under this term’s parent.

Kenseme opens the term in its new glossary. Its acronyms move with it, and its synonyms, related terms, owners, links, and related entities stay attached.

Note: Move Term only moves between glossaries; picking the term’s current glossary is rejected. To put a term under a different parent in the same glossary, click Edit Term and change its Parent Term.

Delete a term

You can delete a term from its own page with Delete Term, or with the trash icon beside it in a glossary’s term tree or the List view.

  • If the term has no children, confirm Delete and the term is removed.
  • If it has children, Kenseme asks what should happen to them:
Option What happens
Delete all child terms too Removes this term and every term below it.
Move children to root level Removes this term. Its direct children become top-level terms.
Move children up to parent Removes this term. Its direct children move under this term’s parent. Only offered when the term has a parent.

Warning: Deleting a term can’t be undone from Kenseme. Its synonym, acronym, and related-term connections, owners, links, and related entities go with it. Export the glossary first if you might need the term back. See Import and export a glossary.
