Troubleshooting a background job

Work through the symptom that matches what you see. For the basics of states and progress, see Read a background job’s status.

The job has been queued for a long time

Likely cause: Other jobs are ahead of it in the queue.

  1. Wait a few minutes. Large imports and AI runs can hold the queue briefly.
  2. Refresh the Background Jobs tab.
  3. If it’s still queued after about ten minutes, contact support with the Job ID.

The job is running but progress doesn’t move

Likely cause: It’s working on a large item, or it has stalled.

  1. Look at Last Updated. If it changed recently, the job is alive; give it time.
  2. If Last Updated hasn’t changed for more than ten minutes, cancel the job if it can be cancelled and start it again. See Cancel a running job.
  3. If it can’t be cancelled, contact support with the Job ID.

The job failed

Likely cause: An error in the work itself, an exhausted AI allowance, or a read-only organization.

  1. Read the Message column.
  2. Open the job’s own screen, where there is one, for the full detail.
  3. Follow Recover from a failed job.

I can’t find the job

Likely cause: A filter is hiding it, it’s older than the list keeps, it’s a schema import, or it never started.

  1. Clear Filter jobs....
  2. Remember the list covers roughly the last 24 hours.
  3. For a file import, look on Schema Imports instead.
  4. Check that the action that should have started the job didn’t show an error. If it did, fix that and try again.

I can’t see the Background Jobs tab

The tab is in Organization Settings, which only organization admins can open. Ask an admin, or watch the job from Home’s In progress card or the screen where you started it.

Cancel doesn’t seem to stop the job

Likely cause: The job stops at the next safe point, not instantly.

  1. Wait 30 seconds and refresh.
  2. If it’s still running after a few minutes, contact support.

A job that’s almost done is usually quicker to let finish.

An AI job never finishes on a large selection

Likely cause: Many objects, each needing its own AI request.

  1. Watch Progress. If it’s still climbing, let it run.
  2. Next time, split the work into smaller selections.
  3. If one object keeps stalling the run, leave it out and describe it by hand.

When to escalate

  • Several unrelated jobs fail at the same time.
  • The Background Jobs tab itself won’t load.
  • The same job fails again after you’ve fixed the obvious cause.

Send the Job ID, when it happened, and the Message. That’s enough for support to find it.
