Relate terms to other terms

Terms rarely stand alone. “Net Revenue” is a kind of “Revenue”, “Client” means the same as “Customer”, and “Churn” is closely tied to “Active Subscriber”. Kenseme gives you four ways to record those connections.

Pick the right kind of connection

Set a parent term

Parent terms turn a flat glossary into a tree. They are for navigation: a child term doesn’t inherit its parent’s definition, owners, or attributes.

  1. On the term page, click Edit Term.
  2. Pick a Parent Term from the same glossary, or clear it to make the term top-level.
  3. Click Save.

You can also pick the parent when you first create the term. Kenseme stops you from creating a loop, such as making a term the parent of its own grandparent.

Add a synonym

  1. In the term’s SYNONYMS section, click +.
  2. Start typing in Synonym. Matching terms from every glossary in your organization appear, each with its glossary name.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Click an existing term to link it.
    • Click Create new term "…" to create the synonym as a new term in this glossary and link it in one step.
  4. Click Add.

The synonym appears on both terms. Click its name to open it.

Add an acronym

  1. In the ACRONYMS section, click +.
  2. Enter the Acronym, for example NPS.
  3. Click Add.

The acronym is stored as an internal term that doesn’t clutter the glossary list. It shows only on the full term’s page. See Define a term for how to turn an internal term into a visible one.

Use a related term for any connection that isn’t a synonym, an acronym, or a parent. The description is where you say what the connection is.

  1. In the RELATED TERMS section, click +.
  2. In Find Term, type part of a term’s name and click the one you want. Terms from any glossary appear.
  3. In Description, write how the two terms are related, for example “Churn is measured against the active subscriber base”. The limit is 512 characters.
  4. Click Add.

The related term appears on both terms with your description under its name.

Tip: Keep descriptions short and phrased the same way across the glossary, for example “X is calculated from Y” or “X is governed by Y”. Consistent phrasing makes the connections easy to scan.

Change or remove a connection

  • To change a related term’s description, click the pencil beside it, edit the Description, and click Save.
  • To remove a synonym, acronym, or related term, click x beside it and confirm. Removing a connection doesn’t delete either term.
  • To remove a parent, edit the term and clear Parent Term.

Browse the connections

Kenseme has no graph view of a glossary. To follow connections, click a synonym, acronym, or related term on one term page to open the next. The LINEAGE bar at the top of each term page takes you back up the hierarchy.
